Then there is the Bowncoat Ball...a convention devoted to one episode.."Shindig" from Firefly, where the crew of the Sereity get gussied up for a big deal, a big dance, and a duel that winds up ruining a rich guy. It also shows that Kaylee Frye can be the Belle of the Ball...by talking engines in a wedding cake dress. Leave it to her to put new meaning to the term "popular mechanics".
The event began in 2004 in Chicago, and was revived in San Francisco on September 22 and 23, 2006 at the Marines Memorial Hotel. Morte than 200 people put on their best finery, and kicked up their heels big time. Throw in a tour of San Francisco Bay and Chinatown, and you've got yourself a fine way to spend a weekend.
This photo gallery is split into two parts. This page has images from Friday's dance at the Empress of China restaurant (which has great food, by the way). One thing I noticed is that a lot of people there were very good at ballroom and folk dancing. They did throw in more modern songs, where I did some random twitching, but I couldn't compete with some of the talent there. Anyway, here's a taste of what went down.....
